The beetroot
is also one of the most important commercial plants available for making sugar.
Once the crop is harvested the tops of the plant is removed and the ones which
are in good condition are transported to the receiving stations. These beetroots are then kept waiting for about 175
days in special containers. They are carried inside the factory in flumes of
water.
The rocks and weeds in the beetroots are washed off then they are
sliced into cossettes which are thin strips of beetroot.
It is then sent to the extraction systems where they are soaked in hot water and the sugar juice is thus
removed. Lime and carbon dioxide is used
to purify the juice and then it is filtered. The purified juice is further
concentrated by boiling it under the vacuum and most of the water is thus
removed by evaporation.
From the concentrated solution the sugar is crystallized and
through centrifugation, it is separated
from the syrup. Once the crystals are separated from the syrup they are then
dried up, stored and moved up.
